These two changes to your room can be significant. If you plan to change the colour of your room, the colour of your curtains might hang in the balance. In that case, decide on your curtains after painting. If, on the other hand, you’re painting only to freshen the existing colour, feel free to proceed in whichever order is convenient. The only precaution would be to protect your curtains whenever wet paint is near them.

Avoid thick, heavy curtains, which tend to retain allergy-triggering dust particles and pollen. They can also prove cumbersome to clean. Lightweight synthetics would be much easier to clean. For easier and more thorough cleaning, you would be better off with vertical or Venetian blinds.

Positioning the curtain pole between the top of the window and 15 centimetres above it, will help make a small room look bigger. However, the position of the pole should also take into consideration the height of the ceiling. Placed too high, it would have the opposite effect and make a small room look smaller.

A pelmet is a thin border, finished in timber or cloth, that caps the window covering. It is designed to hide curtain fittings and also help maintain comfortable temperatures inside the room. Without the pelmet, convection would allow hot air at the window to rise and circulate in the room.
